Dear Dumplin,
I am never going to stop talking about books. Not only do I love them but they are so very important! As I mentioned, October is National Book Month. I will be spotlighting various children’s books with characters of color. You respond better to books with characters that look like you. I see it with my own eyes. You get engaged. You absorb what you see. You want to read these books over and over. You remember the books and you relate it to real life. It’s amazing the difference makes!
To kick off the month, let’s go down memory lane. Here are three books with characters of color I have featured so far. You have each one in your library, and love each one for different reasons.
Keilah West – The World’s Greatest Klutz
Is Keilah West the reason you are suddenly fascinated with bandaids and need a fresh one every day? Hhhhmmmm.
A Sugar Bug on My Tooth
A Sugar Bug on My Tooth helped me so much during your first visit to the dentist! You did not cry and happily said “AAAAAAHHHHH” when you needed to. Thank you Dr. Linda Stirrup!
Emi’s Curly Coily Cotton Candy Hair
Emi’s story makes doing your hair so much easier. You look at the pictures and relate to sitting while your hair is braided. You even point to the barret in her hair and ask for one just like it!
Next week? More books with characters of color that you love.
Love,
Mama
