3 Things I Learned from the Lyrics of “Let it Go”

The Cold Never Bothered Her Anyway

Dear Dumplin,

“Let it goooo, Let it gooooo! Can’t na na na anymooorreeeeee!”

That’s you singing for the one gazillionth time “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen.  The funny thing is I didn’t initially show you the movie.  You listen to music at school and came home singing the song.   Everyday, I noticed you sang this song.  After a few days you said:

“Mommy, Let it Go?”

“Let it Go?”

“Yes, Mommy.  Let it go!”

So I found the song on YouTube and you literally cooed.  I could not believe it!  “Ooooooh.  Mommy that’s nice.”

Everyday from then you would ask for the video.  Then one day as I was switching channels, you saw a snippet of the movie and you screamed, “LET IT GO!!!!”  That was it.  You sat there motionless.  I’m not sure if you even blinked.   When the actual song came on, you immediately got up from your chair and started mimicking the motions of the character on the screen.  I watched in amazement!  You stomped on the ground then rose your hands to the air.  You ran across the room and swirled your hands around.  You were building an ice castle.

This was maybe three or four months ago and I’ve heard “Let it Go” at least 3 to 4 times a week since then.  I never really paid attention to the words.  Recently I thought to myself that it’s absolutely ridiculous to let you listen to a song over and over again if I don’t know exactly what they are saying.  So I looked it up and wow!  What a great message and a reminder on how to approach life.  Here are the three things I learned from the lyrics of “Let it Go.”

“It’s funny how some distance

Makes everything seem small.

And the fears that once controlled me

Can’t get to me at all!”

Sometimes you just need to take a step back and reevaluate a difficult situation.  It may not be as bad as you think.

“The past is in the past.”

Once a moment is gone, it is gone.  You cannot go back in time.  Remember good memories but don’t get stuck in bad ones.

“Let it go, let it go.

And I’ll rise like the break of dawn.

Let it go, let it go.

That perfect girl is gone!”

When you let things go, it frees you to move forward.  Mistakes are really just lessons.  Learn, and move on.  No one is perfect, not even a Disney cartoon character.  So except yourself!

So thank you Dumplin for teaching me something today.  Now could you tell me how long this stage lasts?  You know, the stage of singing the same song over and over again endlessly?  *Smile*

Love,

Mama

  1. Beautiful! It is a great song, and I love that I could “see” her dancing and singing to it! Mine loves it, too. As for singing the same song on repeat, it seems to never end! ha ha! But it could be worse… mine heard London Bridges by Fergie playing in a store and sang it over and over and over. Did I mention that I hate that song? 🙂 Have a great weekend!
