Dear Dumplin,
When I was pregnant with you I was high risk so I didn’t move around too much. I found myself watching way more TV then I probably should have. During that time I discovered House of Lies with Don Cheadle. It was sooo good! During one episode, I heard the lyrics of The Carpenters’ song “Close to You” and immediately fell in love with the words. It felt like the perfect song to sing to you so I did. Then as you got older, I stopped. I started singing standard lullabies to you.
Then the funniest thing happened. You caught a cold and said “Mommy, sing me a song!” You then proceeded to hum “Close to You” and I couldn’t believe it! You were barely three if I remembered correctly and I hadn’t sung the song to you in quite some time. I didn’t think you even remembered me singing it! From then on, you asked me to sing this song to you almost every night. “Mommy, sing me Why Do Birds please?!” Sometimes I have to negotiate out of singing it with two bed time stories or a back rub. I’m not a good singer!
Of course in true Mommy fashion, I changed the words a bit to fit what I thought was more appropriate. Let’s see if you still like me singing to you when you are old enough to read this.
Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time, you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall out of the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair
With gold and twilight from the sky that’s blue
That’s why everybody in town
Follows you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you
Love,
Mama
