Halloween Victory!

Dear Dumplin,

I have to admit that I was worried about Halloween.  You see, although this is your fourth Halloween, I haven’t been so successful in the costume department as I mentioned here.  However, the bad streak has officially been broken!  Not only did you love your costume, but you were able to fully participate in the festivities at school, and you went trick or treating for the first time.  I call that a Halloween victory!

To be completely transparent, I started thinking about Halloween during the summer.  Should I let you pick the costume?  Should I pick it?  What if you change your mind?  What if you ask for a costume that I don’t want to buy you (please no more Elsa)?  I had so many questions.  Finally, I asked you.  Izzy, what do you want to be for Halloween?

“WONDER WOMAN!”  You yelled.

“Are you sure?”

“NO!  SUPER GIRL!”

“Ok, super girl?”

“YES MOMMY SUPER GIRL!”

A few weeks later I asked you if you still wanted to be Wonder Woman or Super Girl.  OF COURSE NOT.

“I don’t want to be Wonder Woman!”  you said with pure disgust.  “I want to be Princess Elsa!”  Now this was my worst fear.  It’s been almost two years of non-stop Elsa and “Let it Go!”  I just could not take it anymore.  I tried to dissuade you,

“Well what about Princess Tiana?”

“NO PRINCESS ELSA.”

“Well what about Princess Cupcake Jones?”

“NO PRINCESS ELSA!”

“Oh isn’t Princess Jasmine nice?”

“MOMMY I WANNA BE PRINCESS ELSA!”

It was my worst Halloween nightmare.  So I made an executive decision.  I would find you the cutest purple princess costume I could find and wish for the best.  Pottery Barn Kids did not let me down.  At first, I had no intention of spending that much money on a costume.  But then I decided you would play in that thing until it falls apart. Off to purchase the Purple Butterfly Princess costume I went.

When the package came, I hid it right away.  I did not want to give you time to think about whether or not you liked it. This was it and that was all there was to it.  I waited until you were about to leave for school on Halloween morning to show it to you.  It was now or never.  I brought it down to the kitchen where you sat having breakfast and nonchalantly started to cut off the tags and put your name in it.

“Mommy is that mine?”

“Why, do you like it?”

“IS IT A PURPLE PRINCESS?”

“Even better.  It’s a Purple Butterfly Princess. Do you like it?”

“I LOVE IT MOMMY!”

Next you screamed and squealed for ten minutes.  The screaming did not bother me at all because I had WON.  I WON doggone it.  No Elsa and a happy Dumplin.  VICTORY.  I took you to school, and could not wait for the school parade so I could watch you march with glee.  You were ecstatic.  Let me present exhibit A of my victory.  Do you see your smile?

That smile was after you had made your parade rounds.  As you can tell, you enjoyed being in a parade.

And this last pic was right before trick or treating.

You ran squealing with glee from door to door with your best friend Harper.  You guys had so much fun!  I mean you guys literally screamed every time you said trick or treat and someone opened a door.  Hilarious!  I feel so blessed to be able to witness these moments with you.  Thank you for a wonderful Halloween.

Love,

Mama
