Am I Spoiling You?

Dear Dumplin,

You were sick last week and I am just now getting back to my normal routine.  You had a low grade fever and a runny nose which I believe was largely due to teething.  One more cutie pie tooth has since popped out and you seem to be relieved.  While you were sick, you only wanted to lay on my chest.  You wanted me to walk around and carry you because you did not feel well.  Laying on my shoulder, on my chest, or wrapping your arms around my neck with your face against mine kept you quiet.  Now I wonder if nurturing you while you were sick has created a monster!

You want me to hold you all the time!  Dumplin Pie, this cannot be.  Where did my well behaved cutie pie go?  Please bring her back!  And the tantrums have begun!  You throw yourself on the floor and scream like someone is trying to kill you!  I have to take a deep breath and remember that you don’t have the words to explain to me what is really going on.  But I tell you, I take deep breaths often.  I really try not to spoil you because I absolutely LOATHE seeing misbehaved children in public.  I truly believe children need boundaries.  Undisciplined children become obnoxious adults.  I simply do not want this for you.

I read an article on MadameNoire.com that says this is a phase.  I hope so.  It also seems like you are reaching your phase a little early?  Does that mean you are gifted?  I hope so.  But that also means I have a lot of work ahead of me because you are really smart and really fast.  You can run!!!!  My concern is that I don’t want to assume this is a phase and be too lenient on you.  On the other hand, I don’t want to over discipline you and take the joy and thrill for life away from you.  What’s a mom to do?

I hope you go back to my sweetie Dumplin Pie soon.  Can you tell me when that will be?

Love,

Mama
