Sista Luv Spotlight – Carmen Murray

Dear Dumplin,

When I first started writing to you, I decided that I would write about women whose stories would be good for you to know and would call them “Dumplin’s Darlings.”  My goal was to show you that you are not alone.  It’s equally if not more important for you see actual examples of women who had the same fears as you, goals as you, dreams as you, and who looked like you. It’s also important to uplift other women.

An online magazine called Madame Noire used to have a feature called “She’s the Boss” and I miss it!  They did 20 episodes where they spotlighted women of color in business.  They featured industries such as construction, public relations, fashion and everything in between.  I looked forward to new entries and found it quite empowering to see women in all walks of life who not only accomplished great things in business, but who I usually had never heard of.  I truly believe the earlier you see reinforcing images of women who are what you aim to be, the easier it will be for you to get there.

Once you decide what you want to do with your life, find a mentor that can point you in the right direction.  Until you have a mentor, read and watch videos on people who have done what you want to do.  Look for motivation everywhere.

Above is one of my favorite episodes of “She’s the Boss” featuring Carmen Murray of Title 9 Productions. I love her confidence and the advice she gives in this video.  I will also continue to spotlight women as an act of Sista Luv.

What I want you to know?  You can do it!

Love,

Mama
